Scrapbook local sports roundup: Club Olympia competes in ‘Spooky Sprints’ meet

Nearly 50 Club Olympia Swim Team athletes competed in the “Spooky Sprints” meet hosted last weekend by the Flashes Aquatics club which competes out of Franklin Central High School.

Nine teams from primarily the southeast side of Indianapolis competed in the three-day meet. Club Olympia was able to take second place in total points behind the much larger home team, Flashes Aquatics, which entered more than 125 swimmers.

Club Olympia was led by Camila Mejia Murguia and Aahan Gupta, who claimed the High Point Awards for the 11-12-year-old girls and 10-and-under boys divisions, respectively. Shreyan Kulkarni claimed second place high points for 11-12 boys. Rebeca Mejia Murguia placed third in the 11-12 girls division, and Todd Hundley was fourth place high points in the 15-and-over boys division.

Camila Mejia Murguia competed in 10 events on the weekend, finishing no worse than third place. She won the 50-yard freestyle, 100 freestyle, 50 butterfly, 100 butterfly, 50 backstroke, 100 backstroke, 100 individual medley and 200 IM and placed second in the 200 freestyle and third in the 50 breaststroke.

Gupta claimed the top finishing spot in the 50 freestyle, 100 freestyle, 200 freestyle, 50 breaststroke and 100 backstroke; second in the 100 butterfly, 100 IM and 200 IM; third in the 50 butterfly and fourth in the 50 backstroke.

Kulkarni was second in the 200 IM; third in the 50 backstroke, 100 butterfly and 100 IM; fourth in the 100 backstroke; fifth in the 50 butterfly, 100 breaststroke and 200 freestyle; with two additional top-10 finishes.

Rebeca Mejia Murguia won both the 50 breaststroke and 100 breaststroke and finished second in the 100 butterfly; third in the 50 freestyle, 100 freestyle, 50 butterfly and 100 IM and fifth in the 200 freestyle; with one additional top 10.

Hundley placed second in the 400 IM, third in the 500 freestyle, fourth in the 200 butterfly and 200 backstroke and claimed five additional top-10 finishes.

Others in the 10U boys and girls divisions included Chad Pendleton, who competed in only six events on the weekend, taking first in the 100 breaststroke, 100 IM and 200 IM and second in the 50 butterfly, 50 backstroke and 200 freestyle.

Myra Jaryal was second in the 100 breaststroke, third in the 50 breaststroke, fourth in the 100 butterfly and 100 IM, with six additional top-10 finishes. Vivan Shah placed fourth in the 50 butterfly and fifth in the 100 IM, with four additional top-10 finishes. Arash Thokade placed fifth in the 50 breaststroke, with five additional top-10 finishes. Sarthak Deshmukh, Eva Rayomand, Rayaan Malviya, Christopher Plunkett, Bella Zhang and Max Tempest claimed a combined 18 top-10 finishes.

The 11-12 boys and girls divisions also included Lexi Miller, who placed second in the 100 backstroke; third in the 50 backstroke; fourth in the 200 freestyle, 100 IM and 200 IM; and fifth in the 50 freestyle, 50 backstroke, 100 freestyle and 100 backstroke.

Xavier Zhang claimed top-10 finishes in all nine of his events, Arjun Agarkar took fifth in the 100 IM, with seven other top-10 finishes. Aashka Shah, competing just two days, was fourth in the 50 butterfly and fifth in the 50 backstroke and 100 IM, with three additional top-10s. Kay Payne finished third in the 100 breaststroke and fifth in the 50 butterfly, with two top-10s. Lily Pendleton placed in the top 10 in four of her six events. Adir Joshi, Shourya Malviya and Chris Suo combined for eight top-10 finishes.

For the 13-14-year-olds, Josh Pendleton competed only two days and was first in all six of his events — the 50 freestyle, 100 butterfly, 100 backstroke, 200 breaststroke, 400 IM and 500 freestyle. Connelly Furnish, competing only on Sunday, placed first in the 200 butterfly, second in the 200 IM and third in the 100 freestyle and 100 breaststroke.

For the 15-and-over swimmers, Judah Nickoll placed third in the 100 freestyle and 400 IM and fifth in the 500 freestyle, with three additional top-10 finishes. Misha Machavariani, also competing Sunday only, took second in the 200 IM and third in the 100 breaststroke and 200 backstroke. Jasper Nickoll was fourth in the 400 IM, and Ethan Hall claimed one top-10 finish.

Other Club Olympia athletes competing during the weekend included Grey Bateman, Bruna Carriera, Landon Cottle, Saanvi Dadheech, Neeti Gujarathi, Gargi Gupta, Victoria Mocanu, Vibha Nagiligari, Mishu Pal, Harini Pinna, Noah Plunkett, Bhavika Rastogi, Ricky Singh, Sara Sonalkar, Ethan Suo and Derek Wang.

For the weekend, Club Olympia swimmers achieved personal lifetime best times in 182 events (65%) and added 12 new Divisional and 14 new Age Group State Championship cuts to their short course season total.

BROOMBALL

Season begins

The 2023-24 Columbus Broomball League season kicked off Sunday with the six teams in action.

Defending champion Hansons pulled out a 5-4 win against CCA. Keith Henry scored two goals, and Max Warr, Matt Psota and Ryan Jepson all added one for Hansons. Scott Herron and Shawn Bauman each had two goals for CCA.

Monsters of Rock blanked Jennings County BC 8-0. Tyler Rash netted three goals, while Ben Echkart and Kyle Roshak each had two goals and Zach Henderson added one.

Our Name Is Earl topped Toyota Tsunamis 2-0. Tom Kareus and Nikki Jones scored the goals.

In the Ironman game, Team 3 and 4 beat Team 1 and 2 4-2 behind goals from Tyler Rash, Warr, Tom Kareus and Scott Herron. Darren Eckerly and Eckhart scored for Team 1 and 2.
