Raiders pull away from Jets in second half

HOPE — Hauser made an improvement on the defensive end from its season opener to its second game, but didn’t quite have the offensive punch to put it over the top in Saturday’s girls basketball game with South Ripley.

As a result, the Raiders were able to hand the Jets a second consecutive defeat, a 44-30 setback on Saturday night.

“Taking care of the ball was one of our main concerns, and I thought we did a better job of that, and I thought we did have a little bit better defensive effort,” Hauser coach Kyle Shipp said. “Now, we have to be able to box out after that and not give up all the offensive rebounds that we did.”

The Jets committed 19 turnovers and were outrebounded 38-21. Still, they were in the game throughout the first half, trailing only 21-16 at the break.

South Ripley (1-1) opened the third quarter with a 9-2 run to pull away.

Norah Berkenstock led Hauser with 13 points, while Erykah Everroad added nine on three 3-pointers. Braelyn Williams grabbed five rebounds.

“We’re working hard on trying to find our groove on offense,” Shipp said. “We had a couple big 3s in there. We definitely have to try to find some offense and get into some type of flow, maybe create some more turnovers on defense to create our offense. That’s one of the big things that we try to do, and we’re not quite doing that yet the way we need to.”
