Scrapbook local sports roundup: Club Olympia competes in Jingle Bell Classic

On the strength of six swimmers who placed in the top three in points in their respective age groups, Club Olympia was able to claim fifth place overall out of 17 teams in Center Grove Aquatics Club’s annual Jingle Bell Classic last weekend.

A total of 755 swimmers representing clubs from the greater Indianapolis area, Fort Wayne, Bloomington and from Illinois and Ohio gathered at Center Grove High School for the annual Pre-Thanksgiving week competition.

Myra Jaryal won the first place high point award in the Girls 8-and-under age group with finishes of no worse than second in her 10 events including 1st place finishes in the 25-yard freestyle, 25 butterfly, 25 backstroke, 25 breaststroke, 50 breaststroke and 100 freestyle, as well as second-place finishes in the 50 freestyle, 50 butterfly and 50 backstroke and 100 individual medley. Arash Thokade claimed his 1st place Boys 8U high point award with first-place finishes in the 25 freestyle, 25 backstroke, 25 breaststroke, 50 backstroke, 50 butterfly, 100 freestyle and 100 IM with second-place finishes in the 25 butterfly, 50 freestyle and 50 breaststroke.

Aahan Gupta won the Boys 9-10 high point award, placing first in the 50 freestyle, 50 butterfly, 100 freestyle, 200 freestyle and 100 IM, with second-place finishes in the 100 butterfly and 100 breaststroke. Gupta added three other top-five finishes and was the highest finishing 10-year-old in the Open Division 500 freestyle with a 25th-place finish.

Camila Mejia Murguia claimed second place in the Girls 11-12 high point battle with eight top-five finishes in 11 individual events. She placed sixth in the girls open division 500 freestyle.

Chad Pendleton took first in the 50 breaststroke and 100 breaststroke and second in the 200 freestyle and 200 IM, with six other top-10 finishes in claiming third place in the Boys 9-10 high point. Pendleton was the highest finishing 9-year-old in the Boys Open 500 Free. Max Tempest was top 10 in nine events, with second-place finishes in the 50 backstroke and 100 freestyle. Tempest was third place high points in the Boys 8U age group.

Other top swimmers for Club Olympia on the weekend included Josh Pendleton, who won the Boys Open 1,650 (mile) freestyle and claimed 10th in the 200 butterfly on a limited weekend schedule. Neeti Gujarathi placed second in the 25 breaststroke, third in the 50 breaststroke and added five other top-10 finishes in the Girls 8U races. Rayaan Malviya placed top 10 in seven Boys 8U events. Lexi Miller and Rebeca Mejia Murguia each claimed four top-10 finishes in the Girls 11-12 age group. Vivan Shah and Aashaka Shah each claimed one top-10 finish.

Shreyan Kulkarni swam to two top-10 finishes in the Boys 11-12 races on the first and last day of the competition. Inbetween, Kulkarni competed away from the pool and finished 20th in the Boys 11-12 USA Track and field 3,000-meter Junior Olympic Regional Championships, which advances him to the Nationals in Louisville on Dec. 9.

Club Olympia entered several relay events on the weekend with second-place finishes in the Girls 11-12 200 medley relay and Boys 9-10 200 freestyle relay and fourth place in the Girls 11-12 200 freestyle relay. The Girls 11-12 relay teams included Lexi Miller, Rebeca and Camila Mejia Murguia, Lily Pendleton and Aashka Shah. The Boys 9-10 relay team included Sarthak Deshmukh, Vivan Shah, Chad Pendleton and Aahan Gupta. Adir Joshi, Daxton Wolf, Xavier Zhang and Shreyan Kulkarni placed 5th in the Boys 11-12 200 freestyle relay. In total, Club Olympia claimed six top-10 relay finishes.

For the meet, Club Olympia athletes swam to personal-record times in 165 events, with 10 of those being new Divisional Cuts with five new Age Group State Cuts. They won 22 events and claimed 15 second-place and 10 third-place finishes.

BROOMBALL

Hansons win showdown

Hansons beat Monsters of Rock 6-3 in a battle of unbeatens in the Columbus Broomball League. Max Warr scored three goals, and Matt Psota, Rahul Bhardwaj and Keith Henry all added one for Hansons (4-0). Ben Eckhart, Zach Henderson and Kyle Roshak had the goals for Monsters (3-1).

Jennings County BC (1-1-2) blanked Our Name is Earl (1-3) 2-0. Darien Castetter and Matt Lata scored for Jennings.

CCA edged Toyota Tsunamis 2-1. Shawn Bauman had both goals for CCA (1-2-1). Jimmy Robertson scored for Tsunamis (0-3-1).

BASKETBALL

St. Mary’s sweeps Panthers

St. Mary’s swept Jennings County on Monday, winning the seventh-grade boys JV game 31-21 and the eighth-grade boys JV game 38-20.

Jonah Kreutzjans led the Panther seventh-graders with 14 points. Cameron Patterson, Lance Kear and Cameron Tichenor all scored four points for the eighth-graders.
