Public Safety Academy set for 2024

Applications are now being accepted for the 2024 Columbus Public Safety Academy. This 11-week course is designed to educate participants about public safety operations in Columbus and Bartholomew County.

Some of the topics scheduled to be covered during the upcoming course include Bomb Squad, SWAT, Patrol Operations, Criminal Investigations, Crime Scenes, Fire Safety and Police Service Dogs.

Participants will also have the opportunity to take a tour of the Bartholomew County Jail, Emergency Operations Center and go on a ride along with a police officer. The academy will conclude with a scenario night where academy participants assume the role of a police officer and will be “dispatched” to simulated calls where their actions will dictate the outcome of the event.

The Public Safety Academy has been offered in Columbus for nearly 30 years and more than 1,000 residents have completed the course that gives participants a “behind the scenes” look at public safety. The class is free of charge, however, it is limited to 35 participants. Interested persons must be at least 18 years of age and be willing to undergo a criminal background check.

Applications can be completed online at https://www.columbus.in.gov/police/info-documents/public-safety-academy/. The academy is scheduled to begin on Tuesday, March 5 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. and will run for 11 consecutive weeks.
