Two arrested on drug-related preliminary charges after traffic stop

COLUMBUS, Ind. — Two people were arrested on preliminary felony drug charges after a Tuesday night traffic stop in Columbus.

Shortly after 9 p.m., CPD officers stopped a vehicle for a minor traffic violation near Eighth Street and Central Place, said Lt. Matt Harris, Columbus Police Department spokesman. Officers approached the vehicle and made contact with the driver, Angela K. Spencer, 46, of Columbus and her passenger, Jerry W. Cossell, 47, of Columbus. A short time later, a CPD canine officer indicated that his police service dog detected the odor of narcotics coming from Spencer’s vehicle, Harris said.
Spencer refused to exit the vehicle and was taken into custody after a short struggle with officers. The officers located several clear plastic baggies that contained nearly 60 grams of methamphetamine in Spencer’s purse, Harris said.
The officers also located a syringe that contained methamphetamine near where Cossell was earlier seated in Spencer’s vehicle.
Both Spencer and Cossell were placed under arrest and transported to the Bartholomew County Jail where they were remanded on the following preliminary charges:
— Angela Spencer: Dealing in Methamphetamine (Level 2 Felony), Possession of Methamphetamine (Level 3 Felony), Resisting Law Enforcement (Class A Misdemeanor)
— Jerry Cossell: Possession of Methamphetamine (Level 6 Felony), Possession of a Legend Drug Injection Device (Level 6 Felony).
