Brian’s picks

A few entertainment options amid the area activities calendar.

*If it’s been a few years since you caught classic pop-rock cover band Forty Years of College in concert, make a note right here: The group, which is slated to play at 7 p.m. Saturday at Edinburgh’s Pixy Theatre, has added Rebecca Burbrink (in photo) as a vocalist, which is roughly akin to tossing a dynamite stick into the fireplace. The woman’s got smoking, powerhouse pipes. Any doubters can search online for clips of her performing such fitting hits as Joan Jett’s “I Love Rock and Roll” at the 2019 “American Pie” concert at Columbus’ Judson Erne Auditorium. And here’s hoping the group, which also has added Tony Sanders, will add a Heart tune or two to its mix, because Burbrink super shines on that particular duo’s material. Tickets are $10 at the door.

*Just how awesome is longtime bass-baritone vocalist Everett Greene, who has in the past toured with the Count Basie Orchestra among others? Nationally heralded jazz pianist Steve Allee, who played in Columbus a month ago, will be his keyboard player when Greene performs a free “Jazz For the Season” concert. The performance will unfold at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at St. Bartholomew Catholic Church, 1306 27th St. in Columbus. I caught a previous performance of Greene’s at St. Bartholomew more than a decade ago, and he was even better than his press clippings boasted. Concert organizer Bogdan Minut is a very selective scheduler, and you will thank me later if you go.
