Pair of losses put Cougar boys in seventh-place game

EDINBURGH — South Decatur boys basketball had a tough day on the first day of the Edinburgh Tournament, falling to Austin 68-48 and Borden 61-52 on Wednesday.

Colby Rathburn led the Cougars with 14 points against Austin. Jacob Scruggs, their point guard and leading scorer for the season, scored 12 and Drake Skaggs added 12.

“They played a box-and-one and face-guarded Scruggs,” South Decatur coach Maurice Buckner said. “There was plenty of opportunity for everyone on the team to step up, and we fell short. We didn’t come to the game ready to play.”

Scaggs led the Cougars with 14 points against Borden. Scruggs scored 12, and Jamison Keller added seven.

“We have to do a better job of trusting in each other, getting some better ball movement, getting into our offensive sets and really trusting the system and utilizing the system to play our defense,” Buckner said. “Our guys get frantic and take a lot of early shots in the offense. It just goes back to some of the disciplinary things that we want our team to follow from an offensive standpoint.”

South Decatur (5-4) will play Victory College Prep in the seventh-place game at 2 p.m. Thursday.

“We’ll recollect and come back in here tomorrow,” Buckner said. “I’m really looking forward to a full week of practice next week.”
