Snow, rain in the forecast over the weekend

2:45 P.M. UPDATE

Bartholomew County Emergency Management says an area of low pressure moving south of central Indiana will bring light snow to our area late this evening and overnight. Around 1 inch of accumulation is expected, with isolated higher amounts possible.

Snow is expected to end by 10 a.m. on Saturday.

This light snow may resulting in snow covered and slippery surfaces, resulting in difficult travel. If you plan being out late tonight and early on Saturday, exercise caution.

 

ORIGINAL STORY

COLUMBUS, Ind. — Bartholomew County is expected to receive two rounds of precipitation over the next week.  The first round will be Friday night through Saturday morning and the second is expected Monday night through Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service.

Friday/Saturday:

  • Light snow, mixed with light rain at times, will fall tonight into Saturday morning, possibly ending with a brief period of drizzle or freezing drizzle depending on surface temperatures.
  • Snow accumulations tonight into Saturday are expected to generally be an inch or less, with localized amounts up to 2 inches possible, with best chances of this happening north of Interstate 74. Impacts on roads expected to be minimal.  Less than an inch of snow is expected for Bartholomew County.

Monday through Wednesday:

  • The first major winter storm of the season will impact the Midwest, Great Lakes and Ohio Valley Monday night into Wednesday.
  • Latest trends and forecast, but with low confidence, favor mostly rain for central Indiana ahead of the system Tuesday. Higher confidence in gusty winds and light snow on the back side of the system Tuesday night into Wednesday.

Travel Conditions:

  • Reminder that roadways may become slick after dark, even with rain, as temperatures drop and surfaces freeze.
  • Allow extra distance between you and the vehicle in front of you.
  • Allow extra time for starting and stopping your vehicle.
  • Be sure to clear ice and/or snow from all windows of you vehicle for better visibility.
