Volunteer slots open for MLK Day of Service

Registration slots for volunteers for United Way of Bartholomew County’s Annual Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service Jan. 15 are now open for a range of local service projects.

The effort honors the late civil rights leader who long championed service to others. In fact, King was in Memphis, Tennessee, to help struggling and striking sanitation workers when he was assassinated in 1968.

Registering can be done by going to the United Way website ar uwbarthco.org and clicking on “Volunteer,” and then clicking on “MLK Day of Service.” The direct link to register is https://uwbarthco.galaxydigital.com/need

Organizers say that there are 120 slots available.

Last year, volunteers helped at three different local nonprofits with a range of tasks.

Many nonprofit and social service organizations post their volunteer needs through the United Way website. The website can be accessed year-round for all occasions and a wide range of opportunities, from mentoring to landscaping to office assistance and more.

The day of service is just one component of the King holiday locally that kicks off with a free community breakfast at 7 a.m. Jan. 15 at The Commons, 300 Washington St. in downtown Columbus.

“The national MLK Day of Service helps embody Dr. King’s giving spirit throughout his life,” said Alicia Monroe, Volunteer Action Center director. “United Way and the Volunteer Action Center seek to honor our community and this national event by organizing and encouraging volunteerism that helps make Bartholomew County a better place to live.”
