East’s McMahon places third in state finals

KOKOMO — Columbus East junior Monica McMahon picked up a third-place finish at 190 pounds in Friday’s Indiana High School Wrestling Coaches Association girls state finals.

McMahon opened with a 2-0 first-round decision against Penn’s Gabby Safeukui before pinning Beech Grove’s Liberty Reeves in 1:21 in the quarterfinals. McMahon was pinned by Hannah West of Mt. Vernon (Posey) in 1:02 in the semifinals before bouncing back with a 5-4 decision against Terre Haute South’s Trista Powers in the third-place match.

The Olympians’ other state qualifier, Eden Knight, dropped an 8-6 decision to Rochester’s Laine Peppler in the first round at 145.

Jennings County’s Sasha Hicks was pinned by Southport’s Abi Bor in 5:07 in the first round at 115.
