College sports notebook: Purdue, Kentucky volleyball to return to East for exhibition

Last spring, local volleyball fans had a chance to see the Purdue and Kentucky women’s teams play an exhibition at Columbus East High School.

The Boliermakers and Wildcats will be making a return to Columbus to play at East again this year. They are scheduled to meet at 7 p.m. March 22.

Tickets once again will be free, and information on securing a spot will be announced in the coming weeks.

IUC to host D-I hoops program in exhibition

IU Columbus has received a commitment from a Division I men’s basketball team to play an exhibition game this coming year at Nexus Park Fieldhouse.

Athletics director Zach McClellan could not reveal the name of the opponent yet. The Crimson Pride will be starting men’s and women’s basketball in the 2024-25 school year.

Schiavello, Ferguson help Wheaton to split

WHEATON, Ill. — Nick Schiavello scored 14 points and led Wheaton with eight rebounds, eight assists and a steal in 37 minutes Saturday in a 75-69 CCIW win against Elmhurst.

Ty Ferguson, a freshman from Columbus North, added two points and three rebounds in 23 minutes for the Thunder.

Schiavello, a senior from North, led Wheaton with 17 points and three blocked shots and added four rebounds and an assist in 37 minutes in Wednesday’s 75-58 CCIW loss to Carthage. Ferguson contributed four points, five rebounds, an assist and a steal in 25 minutes.

The Thunder (4-12, 3-4) host Illinois Wesleyan on Wednesday.

L. Barker, Franklin split pair of games

Lauren Barker recorded 11 points, three rebounds, three assists and a steal in 33 minutes of action Saturday to help Franklin to a 76-48 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference win at Defiance.

Barker, a freshman from Columbus North, had two points, a rebound and two assists in 22 minutes in Wednesday’s 84-72 HCAC loss to Mount St. Joseph.

The Grizzlies (10-5, 5-3) visit Hanover on Wednesday.

B. Barker scores 9 in Army loss

Blake Barker recorded nine points, a rebound and three assists in 22 minutes Wednesday in Army’s 71-65 Patriot League loss to Loyola (Maryland).

Barker, a junior from Columbus North, added three points and a rebound in 15 minutes Saturday in a 79-60 Patriot League loss at American.

The Black Knights (5-12, 1-3) host Colgate on Wednesday.

Lawson helps Hanover to split

Kylah Lawson recorded four points, and a steal and led Hanover with seven rebounds in 24 minutes Wednesday in a 54-39 HCAC loss at Transylvania.

Lawson, a sophomore from Columbus North, had two points, three rebounds and two assists and led the Panthers with five steals in Saturday’s 73-56 HCAC win against Bluffton.

Hanover (9-6, 7-1) will host Franklin on Wednesday.

Murphy helps Olivet to victory

BOURBANNIS, Ill. — Daniel Murphy, a junior from Columbus East, recorded two points, a rebound, three assists and a steal in 12 minutes Wednesday in Olivet Nazarene’s 77-63 CCAC win against Holy Cross.

The Tigers (12-3, 6-1) will host Calumet on Wednesday.

G. Rooks posts win for Hoosiers

The No. 21 Indiana wrestlers lost 30-11 at No. 21 Rutgers on Friday and 46-0 at No. 1 Penn State on Saturday.

Graham Rooks, a sixth-year senior from Columbus East, posted one of the three wins for the Hoosiers at Rutgers. The 14th-ranked Rooks scored an 8-2 decision against Michael Cetta at 149 pounds.

Cayden Rooks, a fifth-year senior from East, lost by tech fall to No. 8 Dylan Shawver at 133 pounds.

Newell takes second in Mile

ANNAPOLIS, Md. — Navy’s Matt Newell finished second in the Mile on Saturday to help Navy to a 92-87 dual-meet indoor track and field win against Princeton.

Newell, a sophomore from Columbus North, finished in 4 minutes, 13.69 seconds.

The Midshipmen will compete in their Wesley A. Brown Invitational on Friday and Saturday.

Kilbarger-Stumpff places eighth in Mile

BOULDER, Colo. — Colorado’s Reese-Kilbarger Stumpff finished eighth in the Mile on Saturday in Colorado’s Potts Indoor Invitational.

Kilbarger-Stumpff, a sophomore from Columbus North, finished in 4 minutes, 17.20 seconds.

The Buffaloes will compete in Air Force’s Ralph Lindeman Invitational on Friday and Saturday.

Kiesler finishes 29th in 3,000

SEATTLE — Boise State’s Julia Kiesler finished 29th in the 3,000 meters Saturday in the Washington’s Indoor Preview.

The Broncos will compete in another UW Invitational and in the New Mexico Team Open Jan. 26-27.
