Bad third-quarter haunts Jets in loss to Morristown

HOPE — Nothing went right for Hauser in the third quarter Thursday night.

The Jets put up zero in the scoring column in the third quarter, and that led to Morristown going on a huge run to give them a 48-33 Mid-Hoosier Conference girls basketball loss.

In the third quarter, the Jets were outscored 29-0 after having a 24-16 lead at halftime. A lot of missed open shots, turnovers and the Yellow Jackets escaping the press plagued Hauser in the quarter.

“They hit us with a couple punches, and the next thing you know, we couldn’t come back. We couldn’t find the basket, they pressured up their defense just a little bit and those things snowballed on us,” Hauser coach Kyle Shipp said. “To our credit, we came back in the fourth and outscored them again. Obviously, the game of basketball is 32 minutes, and we’ve got to get better at playing for 32 minutes.”

The poor third quarter couldn’t make up for a great first half. The Jets (6-16, 1-4) got off to a fast start in the first quarter to lead 16-10. Both offenses stalled a bit in the second quarter, but the Jets were able to maintain an eight-point lead at the half.

Hauser outscored Morristown (9-12, 3-3) 33-19 for 24 of the 32 minutes, but in order to compete and win more games, the Jets need to put together 32 minutes.

“You love our start in the first quarter, you love how we maintained that in the second quarter and you need another fast start in the third quarter,” Shipp said. “We didn’t get that big shot that gets you going in the start of the second half.”

Norah Berkenstock and Abby Manley led the Jets with 11 points apiece, and Bella Kilps added seven. Danika Rutledge led the Yellow Jackets with a game-high 18 points.

Hauser wraps up the regular season with a matchup at North Decatur on Tuesday.

“Before the tournament run, I like where we’re going, and there’s still a lot of life left in this ballclub,” Shipp said.
