Olympians capture first HHC boys swimming title in 42 years

The Columbus East boys swimmers won their first Hoosier Hills Conference title in 42 years Saturday at Jeffersonville.

JEFFERSONVILLE — Columbus East captured its first Hoosier Hills Conference boys swimming championship in 42 years Saturday.

The Olympians racked up 319 points to outscore runner-up Floyd Central’s 294 and claim its first crown since 1982. East coach Doug Trueblood was named HHC Coach of the Year.

The Olympians won 10 of the 11 swimming events. Judah Nickoll took the 200-yard freestyle in a school-record 1 minute, 46.88 seconds and also captured the 100 backstroke (54.90), Cavan Stilson won the 50 freestyle (22.52) and 100 freestyle (48.96) and Misha Machavariani took the 100 butterfly (53.12) and 100 breaststroke (1:00.74).

Todd Hundley won the 200 individual medley (2:02.69) and finished second in the 100 backstroke (54.90), and Keaton Stephenson captured the 500 freestyle (4:58.08) and took second in the 200 freestyle (1:47.55). Gavin Day was second in the diving competition (465.20).

Also for East, Hundley, Machavariani, Judah Nickoll and Stilson won the 200 medley relay (1:39.95); and Judah Nickoll, Stephenson, Machavariani and Stilson took the 400 freestyle relay (3:19.48). Ethan Hall, Jasper Nickoll, Hundley and Stephenson were third in the 200 freestyle relay (1:37.36).

Jennings County finished seventh with 26 points. Charlie Witt took eighth in the 500 freestyle (4:58.08), and Preston Harriman was eighth in the 100 backstroke (1:10.73) to lead the Panthers.
