College sports notebook: Sabotin named MAC co-Swimmer of the Week

Rachel Sabotin was named last week’s Mid-American Conference Co-Swimmer of the Week after leading Akron to a 174-124 senior day victory against Eastern Michigan.

Sabotin, a senior from Columbus who swam at Trinity Lutheran, won the 100-yard butterfly in 54.78 seconds and the 200 butterfly in 2:02.64, both of which are the top times in the MAC this season. She also swam on the winning 200 medley and 400 freestyle relay teams.

Sabotin shared the award Madeline Padavic of Miami (Ohio).

The Zips will visit Miami (Ohio) on Friday.

Lawson helps Hanover top Franklin

Kylah Lawson, a sophomore from Columbus North, recorded 15 points, six rebounds, and assist and a blocked shot and led Hanover with five steals in 32 minutes Wednesday in a 75-70 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference win at Franklin.

Lauren Barker, a freshman from North, had five points, three rebounds and an assist and led Franklin with two steals in 35 minutes.

Barker added two points, two rebounds and two assists in 21 minutes Saturday in the Grizzlies’ 85-43 HCAC win against Defiance.

Lawson had four points and five rebounds and led the Panthers with three blocks Saturday in a 71-62 HCAC win at Bluffton.

Hanover (13-6, 11-1) will host Transylvania on Wednesday. Franklin (12-7, 7-5) will visit Mt. St. Joseph on Wednesday.

Schiavello, Ferguson help Wheaton to win

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. — Nick Schiavello, a senior from Columbus North, scored 12 points and led Wheaton with 10 rebounds, six assists, a steal and a block in 39 minutes Wednesday in a 73-64 CCIW loss at Illinois Wesleyan.

Barker scores eight in Army victory

BOSTON — Blake Barker, a junior from Columbus North, recorded eight points and four rebounds in 13 minutes Wednesday in Army’s 69-59 Patriot League win at Boston University.

The Black Knights (6-15, 2-6) will visit Colgate on Wednesday.

Murphy nets 6 points, 5 rebounds in win

Daniel Murphy recorded six points, and five rebounds and led Olivet Nazarene with three assists in 12 minutes Saturday in a 95-67 CCAC win against Judson (Illinois).

Murphy, a junior from Columbus East, had four points, three rebounds and a steal in 10 minutes in Wednesday’s 92-84 CCAC loss to St. Ambrose (Iowa).

The Tigers (14-5, 8-3) will visit Roosevelt (Illinois) on Wednesday.

Stahl records 2 points, 2 rebounds in ISU win

TERRE HAUTE — Saige Stahl, a freshman from Columbus East, recorded two points and two rebounds in 10 minutes Wednesday in Indiana State’s 70-49 Missouri Valley Conference win against Valparaiso.

Rookses victorious in Hoosiers victory

BLOOMINGTON — Cayden and Graham Rooks each picked up victories Saturday to help 28th-ranked Indiana to a 22-9 wrestling victory against Purdue.

Cayden Rooks, a fifth-year senior from Columbus East, scored a 11-2 major decision against Jacob Macantangay at 133 pounds. Graham Rooks, a sixth-year senior from East, won a 5-4 decision against Marcos Polanco at 149.

Mendez takes 11th in 800, 24th in mile

LOUISVILLE — Mateo Mendez finished 11th out of 46 runners in the 800 meters in 1 minute, 54.04 seconds for Louisville Saturday in the Cardinals’ PNC Lenny Lyles Invitational.

Mendez, a freshman from Columbus North, also finished 24th out of 47 runners in the Mile in 4:19.48.

Louisville will compete in the Bellarmine Classic on Friday.

Kiesler finishes 30th in 3,000 at Washington

SEATTLE — Julia Kiesler finished 30th in the 3,000 meters for Boise State in Saturday’s Washington Invitational.
