Police: Driver arrested after clocked at 111 mph was intoxicated

A Columbus man who was observed driving a Chevy Camaro at more than 100 mph on Indianapolis Road was arrested by Columbus police officers on several charges early Saturday morning.

At approximately 12:40 a.m., a CPD officer observed a speeding vehicle traveling north on Indianapolis Road near Lowell Road. The officer used his patrol vehicle’s radar and clocked the Camaro at 111 mph in a posted 55 mph speed zone. When the officer increased his speed in an effort catch the speeding vehicle, the driver of the Camaro, later identified as Kolby A. Mitchell, 24, of Columbus, turned off the vehicle’s headlights as he drove south on Indianapolis Road at a high rate of speed.

CPD officers caught up to Mitchell’s vehicle near Third and Lindsey streets where they performed a traffic stop with the assistance of the Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Office, and Mitchell was taken into custody. Officers noted that Mitchell had bloodshot and glassy eyes and had the strong odor of an alcoholic beverage on his breath. The officers also observed an open alcoholic beverage inside Mitchell’s vehicle.

Mitchell was given several field sobriety tests and later provided a breath sample of .137%Br.A.C. Mitchell was transported to the Bartholomew County Jail where he was remanded on preliminary charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated (endangerment), resisting law enforcement with a vehicle, reckless driving and criminal recklessness.
