Bull Dogs topple Owls, despite ‘off’ night

By all accounts, Thursday night wasn’t the best night of gymnastics for Columbus North.

The Bull Dogs had several falls on the bars, beam and floor and came away with one of their lower team scores of the season. Still, it was good enough for a 102.85 to 94.775 win against Seymour.

“Floor, it looks like we have some work to do there,” North coach Bob Arthur said. “I wouldn’t say it was a great night on any event. It was not the direction I’m really wantin to go at this point. We’ll just have to get back in and knuckle down a little bit more.”

The Bull Dogs did sweep the four places in the all-around competition. Junior Reese Euler won the vault (9.4), bars (8.65) and beam (9.275) and finished second on the floor (8.75) to capture the all-around with a 36.075.

“I tried a couple of new things,” Euler said. “On beam, it worked well, but on floor, my first pass, I kind of just forgot what I was doing. I just think it was some of our people’s off night because we work really hard in practice on specific things, and when we competed it, we had nerves or something.

Hannah Perry placed second on the vault (9.125) and bars (8.275) and in the all-around with a 33.125. Ellie McIntier took fourth on the vault (8.625) and bars (7.9) on her way to a third-place all-around finish with a 32.325. Emerson Chambers was third on the bars (8.1) and beam (7.625) en route to fourth in the all-around with a 32.175.

North welcomed back Laney Acton and Arwyn Tian, who had missed the previous meet with injury and illness, respectively. Tian finished second on the beam (8.15).

“It was good to get them back in the lineup,” Arthur said. “Arwyn threw her skill on bars, and that was successful. Her beam, she was pretty solid.”
