Chew on This: What’s on Your Plate program coming to Upland

If you’ve ever been interested in learning more about food in Indiana and want to pair it with some conversation, there’s an event coming to Columbus where attendees can do just that.

Indiana Humanities is inviting the public to attend a dinner discussion called Chew on This: What’s on Your Plate from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Feb. 21 at Upland Columbus Brew Pump House.

“It’s an interesting opportunity to get to know people that you wouldn’t normally get to know,” said Indiana Humanities Communications Manager Anna Bowman. “It’s not just limited to people who are experts on food, it’s just people who generally have a curiosity about food and where it comes from.”

Each conversation will be lead by an expert facilitator, who spurs the conversation.

“We came up with a list of questions that we thought would be really interesting to tackle,” Bowman said.

The questions may include some relating to where food comes from, how decisions are made about the food we consume and the way we consume it and the impact of our diets on our bodies and the planet.

“Everyone’s going to be approaching these topics with their own lenses, so the conservation we anticipate would be, kind of going off on tangents.”

The events are a continuation of Food for Thought, which was started in 2011 and examines the ways food helps define Indiana culture and considers food “in the context of history, law, politics, science, the arts, religion, ethnicity and our place in the world,” according to a news release.

The series is also a part of Indiana Humanities’ multi-year thematic initiative Unearthed, which encourages Hoosiers to discover and discuss their relationships with the natural world.

“It’s kind of the theme of how humans affect the environment and how the environment affects us.”

The menu will be curated based upon Upland’s menu, Bowman said, and there will be options for those with dietary restrictions.

Tickets are $30 to $40 and include a meal, a non-alcoholic drink, tax and tip. Alcoholic beverages will be available for purchase for an additional cost. Space is limited and registration is required.
