DOHA, Qatar — Columbus native Michael Brinegar anchored the United States 4×1,500-meter Open Water Relay team to a fifth place finish Thursday at the 2024 World Aquatics Championship.

Indiana University swimmer Mariah Denigan led off the relay, followed by Katie Grimes of Las Vegas, Charlie Clark of Ohio State and Brinegar. They finished in 1 hour, 4 minutes, 16.10 seconds.

On Sunday, Brinegar finished 19th in the Open Water 10K, narrowly missing a qualifying spot to this summer’s Paris Olympics. He still can earn a spot in that event by qualifying in the 800- or 1,500-meter freestyle at the pool Olympic Trials in June at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.
