Talon Jessup // Columbus East sophomore wrestler

Jessup went 2-2 Friday and Saturday to place seventh at 106 pounds in the Wrestling State Finals.

His performance last week: “The second match, I definitely could have wrestled better, but overall, I’m proud of how I went out there and compete.”

Do you do anything special to prepare? “I call it ‘Shadow Wrestling.’ You’re in your stance and in your head, and you’re kind of going through the emotions of that match.”

Favorite drink: “Strawberry milk”

Favorite food: “Peanut butter”

Favorite class: “Weights”

Favorite sports team: “Penn State wrestling”

Favorite athlete: “(Former Iowa State wrestler and Iowa coach) Dan Gable”

Role model: “(Former East and current Indiana University wrestler) Cayden Rooks”

Best advice: “No matter what somebody says, you are you. Go do you.”

Athletics goal: “Be the best person that I can be.”

If you could travel anywhere: “I’d go to Greece because they have the best views and the best history.”

Bethany Lewis // Columbus East freshman gymnast

Bethany Lewis

Lewis won the vault, bars and floor and took third on the beam in winning the all-around competition in a 94.95 to 94.45 loss to Owen Valley.

Her performance last week: “I tried my best, and I think I am getting better. I’m adding improvements to all my routines, and I’m happy with it.”

Do you do anything special to prepare? “I just try not to worry about it and drink a lot of water.”

Favorite drink: “Water”

Favorite food: “Fruit and Chick-Fil-A”

Favorite class: “I like my Cosmetology class.”

Favorite sports team: “US Olympic gymnastics team”

Favorite athlete: “Simone Biles or Suni Lee”

Role model: “Taylor Swift”

Best advice: “Don’t worry about it, and everything will be OK.’’

Athletics goal: “I’d like to be top three in state by my senior year in the all-around.”

If you could travel anywhere: “I’d go to Paris because I like the food there, and the pastries look good and I think it would be a really cool place to visit.”
