COLUMBUS, Ind. — Columbus police said this morning that a shooting reported in the 1600 block of Union Street Thursday night is being investigated as what appears to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Columbus police detectives and the Bartholomew County Coroner’s office are continuing an investigation into the incident.

Bartholomew County Coroner Clayton Nolting said this morning that an autopsy is scheduled today for a white male in his early 20s.

The Republic does not normally report investigations into death by suicide incidents which occur in private, but false social media reports about the incident make it necessary to report the circumstances of the incident using information from investigators rather than rumors on social media.

In regards to the false statements and comments on social media, Nolting said, “The Coroner’s Office strongly advises the public not to rely on social media accounts and to instead rely on official statements from investigative agencies.”
