The Jackson County Jail is at 150 E. State Road 250, Brownstown. The Jackson County Sheriff’s Department operates inside the jail.
JACKSON COUNTY — Indiana State Police Versailles Post are investigating the death of an inmate Tuesday in the Jackson County Jail in Brownstown.
The initial investigation by Indiana State Police Detectives indicated that at approximately 5:15 p.m. Tuesday, jail staff responded to a holding cell to check on the inmate who has been identified as Antonio D. Fox, 35, Jackson, Mississippi. While the jail staff was speaking with him, Fox collapsed inside the cell. Jail personnel began administering life saving measures to Fox, who was the only occupant of the cell. Jackson County EMS was called and arrived on scene to provide further medical care.
Fox was transported to Schneck Medical Center in Seymour, where he was soon pronounced deceased, state police said. The Jackson County Sheriff’s Department requested Indiana State Police detectives respond to investigate the death of the inmate.
The investigation remains ongoing. An autopsy is scheduled to be performed in Hamilton County, Ohio tomorrow. Antonio Fox’ family has been notified.
According to jail records, Fox was arrested on March 29 by the Crothersville Police Department on charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated, possession of paraphernalia and possession of cocaine or narcotic drug. His bond had been set at $1,505.
A probable cause affidavit filed March 31 by Crothersville police states that Fox was a semi-truck driver who was picking up a shipment at Cerro Wire in Crothersville when he was arrested last month.
Crothersville police received a report of a truck driver who pulled into Cerro Wire’s lot, almost hit something, “had to be yelled at to stop” and “could not walk normal,” according to the probable cause affidavit.
When police arrived and approached the truck, they found Fox in the cab with a “white substance on his nostrils” and “appeared to be very off balance and unsteady.” Fox told police that he had arrived from Georgia and had been driving all day.
After handcuffing Fox, police located a blue straw in his pocket that was cut and contained a white substance, according to the probable cause affidavit. Fox initially told police that the substance was baking soda but then said it was cocaine that he had got from a family member’s house.
The substance field tested positive for cocaine. Fox was taken to Schneck Medical Center in Seymour for a blood draw and then booked into the Jackson County Jail.
At the conclusion of the death investigation, the case will be presented to the Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office for review.
Indiana State Police detectives have been assisted in the investigation by the Jackson County Coroner’s Office.
