Propeller maker space plans open house, events

Columbus Propeller maker space will host a free community open house Thursday, May 23, from 5:30-7:30 p.m.

Community members are invited to get creative and join Columbus Propeller, the local maker space at Columbus Municipal Airport, for a family-friendly open house Thursday, May 23, which also will preview some upcoming events.

The open house will include STEAM activities, a food truck, live music, crafts, inventions and more from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at Propeller, 4760 Ray Boll Blvd. The open house will be free but some activities will have a fee.

Here are some of the ongoing and special events coming up at Propeller:

Propeller Lego Club: New designs and build opportunities for children and families each week on select Mondays throughout the summer (see columbuspropeller.com for dates and times). Free.

T-Shirt Design Class/Cricut 101: Sunday, June 2, 2-4 p.m. Learn the basics of Cricut T-shirt design from Cricut master Crissy Riley. Cost: $20 per T-shirt

Saturday Afternoon Builds — Toolbox: Craft a personalized toolbox. Saturday, June 15 or June 29, drop in 2-6 p.m. (build takes about 90-120 minutes.) $25 for Propeller members, $35/Nonmembers.

Welding workshop: Saturday, June 22, 9 a.m.-noon. Learn the basics of welding, positions, and equipment set-up, tour Propeller’s metal shop and get and overview of welding safety, and get two hours of hands-on experience with MIG and flux core welding equipment under the guidance of an experienced instructor.

Basic Woodworking — Cutting board: Two-day project making a personalized wood cutting board. Saturday, June 22 and Sunday, June 23, 2-5 p.m. $70/members, $80/non-members

Stained Glass Workshop #2: (prior participation in Intro to Stained Glass Workshop #1 required) Saturday, July 6 or Saturday, August 24, 11 a.m.-4 p.m. $100, spaces are limited.

Cricut 101: Signs: Sunday July 14, 2-4:30 p.m. Cricut master Crissy Riley teaches the basics of Cricut Design Space. Make your own one-of-a-kind sign from a selection of pre-designed options using high-quality vinyl. $25/per sign

Introduction to Stained Glass: Workshop #1: Saturday, Aug. 10, 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Make a sun catcher and learn to create beautiful designs using pieces of colored glass. Skills taught will include: techniques of cutting glass, soldering, and how to create intricate patterns and designs. All materials provided. $100, spaces limited.
