Brian’s picks

  • If there is a harder working, more dedicated fundraising event founder than Jeff Yarnell of the Community Center of Hope, I haven’t met him or her. He is the more-than-energetic coordinator of the annual Smoke On the Square barbecue event that returns from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday and 11 a.m. to food sellout Saturday on the historic Hope Town Square on Main Street. The food, music and fun free event — one featuring a friendly teams competition among the food smokers — normally attracts more than 1,000 people and raises about $7,000 for the center. Dinners range from hot dogs for a few bucks to brisket and more. Information: hopebbqcontest.com.
  • The activated Chaos I kinetic sculpture will bring on the whimsy for a special, free 50 Years of Chaos! event from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday at The Commons, 300 Washington St. in downtown Columbus. Swiss artist Jean Tinguely’s 30-foot-tall piece is a focus of the regular, free Chaotic Tuesdays that The Commons has hosted for several years since the piece’s movement was restored. Those gatherings, which are generally the only time the piece’s power is turned on, normally attract about 50 to 75 people, according to organizers. They’re hoping this gathering to mark its half-century mark attracts even more people who can’t make it on the scheduled Tuesdays.
  • Country music veteran Pam Tillis will bring her six No. 1 singles to a special acoustic concert at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Brown County Playhouse, 70 S. Van Buren St. in Nashville. Information and tickets: browncountyplayhouse.org.
