School board candidate filings set to begin

Candidate filings for Bartholomew Consolidated School Corp. and Flat Rock-Hawcreek School Corp. school boards are set to begin this week, with several seats up in this fall’s general election.

The filing period begins Tuesday and runs through June 20, according to the Bartholomew County Clerk’s Office.

This year, the BCSC School Board Districts 3, 5 and 7 will be on the ballot. Those seats are held by Todd Grimes, Pat Bryant and Nicole Wheeldon. Additionally, the Flat Rock-Hawcreek School Board seats held by Matt Bruner and Brian Rose will be up for filing.

People who are interested in running for a school board seat must file a petition of nomination with 10 signatures of registered voters.

For the BCSC school board, the signatures can come from any registered voter in the BCSC school district, while for Flat Rock-Haw Creek, the signatures must come from registered voters in the school board district in which the candidate is running, according to Bartholomew County Clerk Shari Lentz.

In 2020, Grimes won the District 3 seat with 59.64% of the vote over Michael Jamerson with 24.84% and then-incumbent James Persinger with 15.52%.

Bryant won the District 5 seat with 53.8% of the vote, defeating Jennifer Corsi, who received 46.2% of the votes.

Wheeldon won the District 7 seat with 63% of the vote for the District 7 seat, defeating Lacretia Ulery, who received 36.98% of the vote.

Rose and Bruner ran unopposed in the 2020 election.
