Man dies in house fire, female injured

The burned house located on the corner of Euclid and Hancock streets where a Seymour man was pronounced dead at the scene of the fire and a female hospitalized.

A 53-year-old Seymour man died in a house fire early Monday morning on the city’s near east side.

Jonathan W. White was pronounced dead at the scene of the fire in the area of Hancock and Euclid streets, according to a news release from Lt. C.J. Foster with SPD.

The fire was reported at 9:10 a.m. by city officers Sam Hughes and Joe Fagon. The officers were on routine patrol when they saw a house fully engulfed in fire, Foster said.

The officers were able to find a female who was yelling for help and suffering from smoke inhalation inside the residence. After bringing her to safety, they re-entered the house in attempt to save the male but were unable to do so as conditions inside the residence were too bad forcing them to exit the house.

An official with the Jackson County Coroner’s office pronounced White dead at the scene, Foster said.

The female, whose name was not released, was treated at the scene by emergency personnel with Jackson County Emergency Medical Services and Seymour Fire Department before being taken to Schneck Medical Center for treatment.

Foster said her condition was not known Tuesday afternoon.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by Seymour fire and police departments, the coroner’s office and the Indiana Fire Marshal’s Office.
