Bartholomew County Sheriff deputies arrest local man on drug-related charges following traffic stop

COLUMBUS, Ind. — Bartholomew County Sheriff deputies arrested a passenger in a vehicle that was stopped for speeding northbound on U.S. 31 near North County Road 550W on Tuesday.

Sgt. Dane Duke, sheriff department spokesman, said during the traffic stop, passenger John William Hayes, age and address unavailable, displayed nervous behavior.

Deputy Brandon Sellers and his K9 partner Jari conducted a free air sniff around the vehicle during the traffic stop which resulted in Jari indicating the presence of narcotics inside the vehicle, Duke said.

A search of the vehicle located a backpack belonging to Hayes that contained methamphetamine, packaging materials, scales, smoking devices, marijuana, oxycodone pills and other items of evidence including nearly $3,000.
Hayes was arrested on preliminary charges of dealing in methamphetamine, possession of methamphetamine, dealing in a controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance, possession of marijuana, and possession of paraphernalia. Hayes remains in custody on a 48 hour hold at the Bartholomew County Jail.
