North, East go 1-2 in sectional; Perkins wins medalist in playoff

Joseph Perkins

GREENSBURG — It took an extra hole to crown an individual sectional champion.

Columbus North’s Brady Schneider and Joseph Perkins and Shelbyville’s Jake Garrison all tied the low score with 74s. On the first playoff hole, Perkins birdied to win medalist honors in the boys golf sectional at Greensburg Country Club.

“It was about staying with it,” Perkins said. “I’ll have bad shots. I’ll have good shots. It was just about keeping it together and keeping the momentum. I put everything together today and played a really good round.”

The Bull Dogs also took home the team trophy by finishing with a 304, which was 14 shots better than runner-up Columbus East. Shelbyville claimed the third-and-final regional qualifying spot with a 327.

Batesville took fourth with a 330, and North Decatur was fifth with a 331. Hauser finished 11th with a 448.

“It feels really good,” Schneider said. “We’re looking towards regional. It feels good to win it. I like our team, and we’re playing well at the end of the year.”

Austin Perry and Alex Clark finished with a 78 apiece for the Bull Dogs. Carter Battin carded an 87.

“We struggled a little bit on the front nine and kind of dug ourselves a hole, but they straightened the ship out on the back,” North coach Doug Bieker said. “I’m really proud of them. They could have packed it in, but they didn’t. They fought back on the back nine. We talked a lot about the tournaments leading up to this and the fact this team has a lot of potential to do this. I really do think this team still could surprise some people next week (at regional).”

Carter Greene shot a 75 to lead East. Pierce Arnholt added a 78, Ben Luedeke carded an 82, Keaton Stephenson had an 83 and Mason Reeves finished with a 96.

“I’m happy to have a tee time next Thursday and move on,” East coach Keith VanDeventer said. “The past month hasn’t been our best. We haven’t played our best, but it’s nice to see them moving in the right direction at the end of the season. We’re happy to be playing next week.”

Hunter Pappano led Hauser with an 83. Elijah Price finished with a 115, Gavin Bain carded a 121 and Kolten Wallace had a 129.

South Decatur’s Ayden Billingsley played as an individual and finished with a 123.

North and East will play in the Providence Regional at Champions Pointe Golf Club on Thursday.
