College sports notebook: Meyer, Aces headed to Super Regional

GREENVILLE, N.C. — Jakob Meyer and Evansville have made history Monday by advancing to the NCAA Super Regional for the first time ever.

The Aces (37-24) opened the Greenville Regional with a 4-1 upset of 16th-ranked East Carolina on Friday. Evansville then beat VCU 17-11 on Saturday before falling to East Carolina 19-6 on Sunday and beating East Carolina 6-5 on Monday.

Meyer, a fifth-year senior from Columbus North, pitched the final two innings of Saturday’s 17-11 win against VCU. He allowed one run on three hits and two walks.

Gilley, ISU fall in NCAA Regional

LEXINGTON — Cole Gilley started on the mound and took the loss for Indiana State in Sunday’s 5-0 loss to host Kentucky in the Lexington Regional.

Gilley, a redshirt-junior from Columbus East, allowed two runs (one earned) on two hits in 1 2/3 innings. He struck out one and walked two.

The Sycamores (44-15) had fallen to Illinois 4-1 on Friday and beaten Western Michigan 6-4 on Saturday and Illinois 13-2 on Sunday prior to being eliminated by Kentucky.

South nets All-America status

GENEVA, Ohio — Indiana University’s Nick South earned All-American honors over the weekend in the U23 Nationals for Freestyle competition.
