Looking Back – June 4

J. Irwin Miller, chairman of the board of Cummins Engine Co., steps out of a 1934 Auburn powered by a Cummins diesel engine on June 4, 1974, which was restored secretly by company employees as a surprise for Miller. In chrome lettering on the side of the hood appear the words “Cummins Diesel Powered.”

2014

Columbus residents could fly back in time with Aviation Day, where the highlight of the event was a stopover by a commemorative World War II B-17 airplane. The airplane flew from Topeka, Kansas to Columbus as part of its Sentimental Journey tour around the country.

1999

World War II aircraft and equipment flowed across Columbus Municipal Airport as part of a daylong airport awareness event, which also marked the 55th anniversary of the June 6 D-Day invasion. Pilots and other local veterans who participated in the D-Day invasion were saluted in a ceremony in the hangar, followed by a show from the Marsh Star Aerobatic Team.

1974

A 1934 Auburn automobile powered by a Cummins diesel engine, the only vehicle of its kind, was gifted to J. Irwin Miller, chairman of the board of Cummins Engine Co. The surprise was made in honor of Miller’s 40th anniversary with the company.
