With the IHSAA Moratorium Week only a few days away, Columbus North hosted a three-way football scrimmage with Pike and Bedford North Lawrence on Wednesday evening.
As is the case with most summer scrimmages, players were in helmets and shorts, and there was no tackling to the ground.
“It was a solid scrimmage,” North coach Logan Haston said. “Obviously a three-way is kind of a unique setup. There were a lot of moving parts, but when our guys were out there, we were competing.”
Returning junior quarterback Asher Ratliff was out with his right arm in a sling, so senior wide receiver Braylon Thoman took most of the snaps on offense for the Bull Dogs.
Defensively, North returns eight of 11 starters. One of the new starters, cornerback Devonte DeGraffenried, and returning senior linebacker and Republic Football Player of the Year Garrett Long had interceptions on back-to-back plays late in a series against Pike.
“We were a little slow to start, kind of sluggish, but once we got into the groove of the scrimmage, our intensity picked up, our speed of play picked up and I thought we ended the scrimmage on a very high note,” Haston said.
Haston was similarly pleased with what the Bull Dogs did in last week’s scrimmage at Whiteland.
“We did really good,” Haston said. “They’re a really physical team, and I thought we matched their physicality pretty well and had some really good plays against them.”
North will have another home scrimmage against Fishers at 9 a.m. July 17 before participating in a team camp July 22-24 at Taylor University.
