Students receive Next Generation Hoosier Educators Scholarship

In the eighth year of the Next Generation Hoosier Educators Scholarship, the Indiana Commission for Higher Education awarded over 300 scholarships, with five of those going to local students.

In Bartholomew County, Grace Hattabaugh, who attended Hauser Jr./Sr. High School, will be going to Franklin College. Betsy Hoene, from Columbus East High School, will be going to Purdue University, West Lafayette. Brilynn Martin, from Columbus North High School, will be going to Franklin College.

Reanne Grooms from Jennings County High School will be attending Indiana University Bloomington. Sarah Jaquess of Jennings County High School will be attending Indiana University Columbus.

The Next Generation Hoosier Educators Scholarship is a renewable scholarship of up to $10,000 per year. Students who are awarded and choose to accept the scholarship will teach five years at an eligible Indiana school, or will repay the amount of the scholarship.

This year, 945 students applied for the scholarship, boasting a record breaking number. Applicants represented 315 high schools in 89 counties.

To qualify, students had to either graduate in the top 20 percent of their high school class, have at least a 3.o cumulative GPA, earn a score in the 20th percentile on the SAT or ACT. To retain eligibility while in college, students must earn a 3.0 GPA with at least 30 credit hours per year.
