Bartholomew County Sheriff deputies investigating fatal accident

COLUMBUS, Ind. — Bartholomew County Sheriff deputies are investigating a two-vehicle collision at East County Road 100S and South County Road 525E that resulted in the death of one person and injuries to two others.

Deputies were sent to the scene at 4:11 p.m. and observed a Chevrolet Impala with extensive damage in which both occupants were trapped inside the vehicle. The other vehicle involved was a Chevrolet pickup truck with a single occupant who was trapped in the vehicle.

Personnel from several responding fire departments extricated the occupants from both vehicles. The driver of the Chevrolet truck, Tyler Myers, 21, Bedford, was transported to Methodist Hospital by helicopter with significant injuries. The passenger of the Impala, Christopher Harris, 47, of Greensburg, was also flown by helicopter to Methodist Hospital with severe injuries.

The driver of the Impala, Tonya Whiteside, 51, of Greensburg, was given aid on scene by emergency medical personnel, but she was pronounced deceased at the scene.

At this time the preliminary investigation indicates that the Impala disregarded a stop sign at the intersection and entered the intersection resulting in the collision.

Neither drugs or alcohol are believed to be a factor in the incident at this point in the investigation. This investigation is ongoing by the Bartholomew County Accident Reconstruction Team.
