‘Chaotic Tuesday’ to fire up famed sculpture

A group gets a look at Chaos I in The Commons. The 1971 Jean Tinguely kinetic sculpture comes to life most Tuesdays during “Chaotic Tuesdays” events that are free and open to the public.

One of Columbus’ most iconic artworks will come to life during a free and family-friendly event at noon most Tuesdays at The Commons, 300 Washington St.

During “Chaotic Tuesday” events, staff at The Commons bring to life “Chaos I,” the kinetic sculpture by the late Swiss artist Jean Tinguely. Commissioned in 1971 by former Cummins President J. Irwin Miller, his wife Xenia Miller, and Miller’s sister, E. Celementine Tangeman, the sculpture made its public debut 50 years ago and continues to fascinate.

Built in large part from more than three tons of scrap metal and parts collected locally, “Chaos I” includes 12 motors and more than a dozen functions.

Along with seeing the structure come to life, visitors to Chaotic Tuesdays also can learn about how the structure came to be and take part in other activities at The Commons.
