Columbus East High School tennis stars Ashlee Hasson and Megan Galle were preparing for the Midwest Open Girls 18 Championship, which was set to take place at Columbus North, Columbus East, Donner Park and Lincoln Park through July 22. A total of 128 girls from all over the Midwest were chosen to compete.
1999
The Solar Stealth team, comprised of students in the C4 Columbus Area Career Connection program, was set to race their full-sized solar car from Dallas to Los Angeles in preparation for the World Solar Challenge in Australia. The team had previously raced from Dallas to San Antonio in 1997.

Robert N. Brown, publisher of The Republic, was named chairman of the newly created United Press International Advisory Board’s Committee of Technology at a board meeting in Chicago.
