Brian’s picks

* If you’re a jazz junkie, then step into the rhythm of the musical muse this week with two significant — and free — events from which to choose. At 5:30 p.m. today, as part of the new Jazz IN Columbus series, performing on Fourth Street is basically an Indianapolis all-star ensemble known as The Blue Side. The group consists of several musicians well known to Columbus residents — Tad Robinson (pictured), Gordon Bonham, Rob Dixon and Kenny Phelps, the last two 0f whom sold out shows recently at the Jazz at Helen’s series.

* The other free jazz concert is the Al Cobine Big Band performance (above) at 7 p.m. Friday on the Bartholomew County Public Library Plaza, 536 Fifth St. in downtown Columbus. The show is part of the WFIU Public Radio Jazz in July series.

* This might be a first in this space: I hereby suggest you GO! and eat, for a good cause. With the 38th Annual Our Hospice of South Central Indiana Labor Day Weekend Concert approaching with The Woomblies Rock Orchestra, the Fraternal Order of Eagles No. 741 at 930 Washington St. in downtown Columbus is holding a fundraising fish fry for the nonprofit hospice from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at the Eagles’ venue. A home-cooked meal valued at $10 will be available for donations of any amount. The meal will be fish, mac and cheese, baked beans, and tartar sauce. Large orders can be placed by Thursday for Friday pickup.
