Looking Back – July 18

2014

Chris Lowery, one of the founders of Ivy Tech Community College in Batesville, was named the chancellor of the Ivy Tech Columbus and Southeast regions. Lowery also served as the director of public policy and engagement for Batesville-based Hillenbrand Inc. for 19 years.

1999

The annual Columbus Scottish Festival began at Mill Race Park, which featured sheepdog herding trials, athletic competitions, music, food and souvenir booths. Despite inclement weather, attendance was high, with around 3,000 visitors.

1974

Hope native Marcella Hankins was rewarded with three letters of commendation for her time spent serving with the Women’s Army at Fort Sam in Houston, Texas, Fort McClellan in Alabama and Naha, Okinawa, in Japan. The letters were given to her by the commanding officer of the hospital at Camp Kue in Okinawa.
