Local ILEARN scores stay stagnant for 2024

Student achievement in state-mandated reading and math tests in local schools are lagging the state average, though both state and local student test results rose slightly this year, according to ILEARN scores released by the Indiana Department of Education.

Statewide, 41% of students who took the ILEARN online assessment in grades 3-8 in the spring are at or above English language arts proficiency, similar to the 40.7% from last year. 40.7% are at or above the standard in math, comparable to the 40.9% last year. For proficiency in both, 30.8% of students reached that marker, similar to the 30.6% last year.

Locally, 40.2% of students in the Bartholomew Consolidated School Corp. tested proficient in English, 40.4% in math, and 30.6% in both. These numbers are similar to last year, when 40% of students were proficient in English and math, and 31% of students in both.

“We recognize the need to continually reflect on and enhance our support for student learning in all areas. ILEARN is one small piece of the larger picture within a child’s educational experience,” said Laura Hack, BCSC’s Director of Elementary Education, in a statement Thursday.

The statement also noted that, statewide, proficiency rates are expected to take a few years to reach pre-pandemic levels. BCSC will be introducing ILEARN Checkpoint Assessments in five of their schools, as a way to try and gauge growth throughout the year.

Flat Rock Hawcreek School Corp. had 39.3% of students score proficient in English, 44.6% of students show proficiency in math, and 30.6% of students showed proficiency in both. Last year, 42% of students scored proficiency in English, 47% in math, and 35% in both.

Jennings County School Corp. had 34.7% of students proficient in English, 37.1% proficient in math, and 24.8% proficient in both. These are up from last year’s scores of 32.3% in English, 25.2% in math, and 23.3% in both.
