College sports notebook: Samuel, Sabotin named Academic All-America

Two swimmers from Columbus have earned Academic All-American recognition.

Indiana Wesleyan’s Erica Samuel, a senior from Columbus North, has been named to the NAIA Academic All-American first team by the College Sports Communicators for the second year in a row. To be eligible for the honor, student-athletes must be at least a sophomore, have a 3.5 GPA and must compete in 90 percent of their school’s contests.

Samuel also is a two-time Daktronics Scholar Athlete and Academic All-MSC honoree. She was an NAIA All-American as a junior, an All-MSC swimmer each of the past three seasons and was named MSC Swimmer of the Week on Oct. 2, 2023.

Rachel Sabotin

Akron senior Rachel Sabotin, a Trinity Lutheran graduate and Columbus native, is on the College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America Scholar All-American second team. Recipients must have at least a 3.5 GPA and meet a “B” time standard for the national championship. Akron also was named to the Spring Scholar All-America Team.

Sabotin is a two-time Academic All-MAC selection. She is a two-time first-team All-MAC honoree and earned second-team All-American honors in 2021.

Schiavello headed to Case Western

Nick Schiavello, who has played basketball at Wheaton (Illinois) the past four years, has decided to play a fifth year at Case Western Reserve in Cleveland.

Schiavello, a Columbus North graduate, was named to the All-College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin second team for the second consecutive year. He led Wheaton with 13.7 points, 6.2 rebounds and 3.9 assists per game this season.

Case Western Reserve went 23-5 last season and reached the NCAA Division III Round of 16.
