The Courageous RI Youth Media Contest recently recognized a group of IU Columbus students and a professor.
The students, Jimena Leal, Ally Parker, Mary-Kate Nolley, Alexander Ridge, Sydney Owens, and Shelby Vannetta, earned first place in the video category of the contest. Their video covered media disinformation, and showed three examples of students encountering false or misleading information and fact-checking it.
The first place prize is $500, according to an article from IU.
Pamela Morris, Ph.D, IU Columbus Associate professor of Communication Studies, also earned an award through Courageous RI. Morris was recognized for “Outstanding Teacher Leadership,” and also earned $500. She worked to promote the contest, leads IU’s Media Literacy Week, and is affiliated faculty with the Media Education Lab at the University of Rhode Island, according to the article.
Courageous RI’s Youth Media Contest asked the question “How can media literacy, active listening, kindness and compassion, and community engagement reduce the hate and fear that leads to violence?” The student project was also for the class COMM-C 316 Human Communication and the Internet, according to the article.
