Katherine Allen

COLUMBUS

Katherine Elizabeth Allen (nee Hubbuch), passed away on July 19, 2023.

Kathy was born on December 10th, 1949 in Lexington, Kentucky to Philip and Minerva Hubbuch.

She was a graduate of Rietze Memorial High School, Evansville and attended Fontbonne University in St. Louis, St. Louis University and Indiana State University graduating with a B.S. and M.S. in education.

Kathy was a loving daughter, caring sister, supportive friend, devoted wife, nurturing mother, and proud grandmother. She was fun-loving, intelligent, humorous, passionate, strong-minded, loving, giving, and kind. Kathy always made certain that people knew how special they were to her. She met her husband Mark at Indiana State University and soon after started the beautiful family she had always wanted. She and Mark had two sons and just like everything else she did, Kathy gave everything she had to raising her boys and to being a devout wife to Mark. Over the years, they made wonderful memories at the home they built on the lake and traveling together. Family vacations usually involved camping and hiking or snow skiing. Attesting to Kathy’s ability to make everyone feel accepted and special, her sons’ wives felt this from her from the beginning. They were welcomed with open arms into the Allen family as her daughters. She was the best, most understanding mother-in-law for which a girl could ask. Kathy was extremely social and giving. As her younger son, Ross, put it, “Anything she did, she would either do it with someone or for someone.” She was an exceptional host and loved every minute of it. She was always in her happy place when having visitors, friends, and family at her home and she made sure everyone felt included and welcomed. She found ways to make some of her hobbies into social activities. She was involved in a book club and the Harrison Lake Garden Club with many of her friends. She found enjoyment in doing many crafts throughout the years including making wreaths and flower arrangements, but she was best known for her love of knitting. Kathy could often be found in a circle of friends or family, knitting, and talking away for hours on end. She made beautiful sweaters, scarves, and hats for herself, friends, and family. Kathy had a great fondness for antiques, and often went to auctions and antique malls. She was a collector of many items including bird houses, furniture, knickknacks, ceramics, and much to her grandchildren’s delight, Santa figurines that decorated her home during the holidays. She would find, refinish, and restore old furniture and sell it at her antique booths or give it to family and friends. After becoming a proud Grammy of three, Kathy’s life revolved around spending as much time with them as possible. She absolutely adored them, and the feeling was mutual. Sierra, Taylor, and Liam were always excited to go to Grammy and Poppa’s house. Kathy played games with them, gave them lots of treats, and generally spoiled them as much as she could. When staying with her, the kids grew up with lake days, crafts, toys, bubble baths, ice cream sandwiches, stories, reading, and. an endless supply of love and fun.
