First responders recover body of Grandview Lake man early this morning

COLUMBUS, Ind. — Firefighters on the scene of a search for a missing 70-year-old in Grandview Lake found his body early this morning after it surfaced near where he disappeared on Wednesday.

At about 5 a.m., the body of Richard Chaille, 70, who lived in the Grandview Lake area, was recovered near an area of the lake where he was last seen floating, without a life jacket, with his feet on the back of a boat, investigators said.

Indiana Department of Natural Resources conservation officer Travis Stewart said a firefighter and a Bartholomew County Sheriff deputy were at the scene overnight and were able to locate Chaille early Thursday.

Bartholomew County Coroner Clayton Nolting was called to the scene. The family has been notified. Nolting said an autopsy is planned for Friday.

Conservation Officers were assisted by the Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Department, Southwest Volunteer Fire Department, Harrison Township Volunteer Fire Department, Columbus Township Fire Department and Columbus Regional Heath, along with the coroner’s office.
