Stephen Grider “Steve” Wiggins

Stephen Grider Wiggins, 81, of Columbus, IN passed away at home on August 4, 2024.

He was born on May 21, 1943 in Plainfield, IN to Donald and Annadell (Grider) Wiggins. He attended Plainfield Schools, graduating from Plainfield High School in 1961. He attended Milligan College and graduated from Indiana State University, where he was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity. Steve worked for a year at Public Service Indiana before starting a career at Arvin Industries where he was the National Sales Manager for the Arvinyl Division. He held the positions of Vice President, and then President and General Manager at Como Plastics before retiring after ten years as President of HRC Roofing.

Steve served on countless committees in the community, including United Way, Cheer Fund, Big Brothers Big Sisters, where he was named Big Brother of the Year in 1981.

He attended First Christian Church where he taught Sunday School for fifty years, served several years as a Deacon and forty years as an Elder. Steve served as chairman of the board of Elders for many years and chaired the new construction project, chaired or served on several search teams to hire ministers, was the Elder over A First Christmas, and began the Tower Restoration Project. Steve’s character was defined by his faith and his love of God and service to Him and his fellow man.

Before his battle with Parkinson’s, Steve enjoyed traveling with family and friends, playing golf, bridge, tennis, racquetball, studying and reading. Steve’s love of basketball led him to coach church league basketball for several years. He was also an avid Reds and Bears, and IU fan all his life.

Steve is survived by his wife of 43 years, Cheri; son, Robert (Cara) Coleman; daughters, Elizabeth (Elijah) Taylor, and Rebecca (Thad) Winter; grandchildren who affectionally called him “Wiggy”, Noah Stephen Coleman, Mallory (Riley)Scott, Alexis (Chris) Basik, Jake Taylor, Natalie Winter, and Gretchen Winter; great-grandchildren, Rain Scott and Stevie Scott; and brother, John (Janet) Wiggins.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First Christian Church or the charity of your choice.

Visitation will take place Thursday, August 8 at Barkes, Weaver, Glick Funeral Home on Washington Street from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The funeral service will take place at First Christian Church at 11:00 a.m. Friday August 9 with visitation from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service.
