Services and studies

Alongsider Church — Alongsider is a community of house churches coming together to worship as one church at YES Cinema on the first and third Sundays of the month. It’s a place of belonging where members learn, grow, experience community and pray together.

House churches meet in neighborhoods on the second and fourth Sundays for worship through conversational study and community building. The congregation focuses on care and connection, prayer, and sending one another out.

Asbury United Methodist Church — Asbury offers a traditional service at 8:45 a.m. and a contemporary service at 11 a.m. Nursery is available for both services. Kids’ church is offered only at the 11 a.m. service. Sunday school classes meet at 10 a.m. Asbury offers a variety of classes and group studies at various times during the week. Central Heights Church of God — The church offers 9:30 a.m. Sunday school for all ages and worship services at 10:30 a.m. The message will be led by Pastor Jason Johnson. Children’s church takes place during service and a nursery is available.

East Columbus United Methodist Church — Sunday morning worship service begins at 9 a.m. The morning blended worship service includes praise music and traditional hymns. Children receive a special message during children’s moment and are dismissed for children’s church during the service. Sunday school begins at 10:10 a.m. with classes for all age groups. Holy Communion is served on the first Sunday of each month.

Fairlawn Presbyterian Church — The church has in-person and Zoom services at 9:30 a.m. To join on Zoom, email the church office at [email protected] to request a Zoom link.

Fellowship and coffee hour is every Wednesday at 7 p.m. Contact the church for the Zoom link.

Women’s Bible study is the third Tuesday of each month at 1 p.m.

Faith Lutheran Church — Worship each Sunday begins at 9 a.m. in person and livestreamed on the church’s Facebook page. Most Sundays, Sunday school and an adult Bible study are offered from 10:15 to 11 a.m. Wednesday evening worship is offered at 6:30 p.m. each week.

Preschool classes continue throughout the school year and the congregation offers an afterschool program each school day from 3 to 6 p.m. with busing from Southside Elementary.

First Baptist Church — Worship begins at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday mornings, with a nursery and children’s programming available. The church also has several Sunday school offerings and a summer Bible study series “Sips & Scripture” that meets on Tuesdays at 1 p.m. and Thursdays at 9:30 a.m. at Lucabe Coffee, 2531 Eastbrook Plaza, Columbus.

First Lutheran Church — First Lutheran Church offers in-person worship on Sunday mornings at 8:45 a.m. for the traditional service and 11:15 a.m. for the contemporary service. First Presbyterian Church — Aug. 11 will be a joyful hymn sing, which includes favorites requested by church members. Join the pick-up choir that morning to lead the congregation in singing. It is also the return of kids church to our Sunday morning schedule. Where did the summer go?

First United Methodist Church — On Sunday, Aug. 11, at 10 a.m., the Rev. Howard Boles will deliver the message, “What Love Looks Like”. The Scripture will be 2 Samuel 18:5-9, 15, 31-33. The church encourages those attending in person to arrive 10 minutes before the service. Child care will be available from 9:45 a.m. until the end of the 10 a.m. service. Sunday school for children ages 4-12 will start at 9 a.m.

For those unable to attend the in-person service or not yet comfortable meeting in person, service livestreams will be available on the church Facebook page and the church YouTube channel (FUMC Columbus). Videos will be available on the church website for later viewing as well.

On Aug. 11, the church will be celebrating our teachers for the beginning of another school year. Whether you are a Sunday school teacher, a preschool teacher, or have just started back officially for the school year, all teachers are invited to join the church in service for a back-to-school blessing as well as cake in the fellowship hall following service.

Blessing of the Backpacks will be Aug. 11. Have your child bring their backpack to service for the family ministry moment and a blessing for the new school year. Plan on staying after service for cake.

The selection for the August book club begins with an unusual proposition. Every person in the world receives a box with a piece of string that indicates how long you will live. Do you want to know? If so, how does the knowledge impact how you live? It is an intriguing question from Nikki Erlick’s new book, “The Measure.” At 6 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 18, join the church book club in the church library to discuss this book and the questions it raises. All are welcome.

Destination Unkown! For youth grade 6 and up, plan on meeting at the church at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 18. Bring $10, a hat, and sunglasses. Pickup is at 4 p.m. Let Shana know if your youth is interested in going on this outing.

Garden City Christian Church — Sunday school classes are available for infants through adults at 9 a.m. At 10 a.m. on Sunday mornings, the church offers a blended worship service as well as classes for kids through fifth grade.

Wednesday evening Bible study, “The Life of Moses,” is at 6:30 p.m. weekly.

Troop IN-0110 meets twice monthly on Thursdays from 5:30 to 7 p.m. during the school year.

Mount Pleasant Christian Church — The church invites the community to visit the little 150-year-old country church for a 10:30 a.m. service every Sunday. The church preaches out of the King James Bible and sings out of hymn books. The church is Bible-based, Christ-centered, and spirit-led.

Petersville United Methodist Church — On Sunday, Aug. 11, at 9 a.m., Pastor Rebecca Milne will bring the message “Prodigal Church” based on Scripture from Luke 5:27-32. The church will share communion together. Those in attendance are welcome to join in fellowship time after the worship service.

Linda McNealy will serve as song and worship leader. Teresa Covert will share the children’s sermon. The service will be available to view on Facebook throughout the week.

The United Women of Faith will meet Thursday, Aug. 15, at 3:30 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall. All are invited.

Anyone in the community is invited to enjoy a meal and a time of sharing at “The Table” at the church every second Thursday at 6 p.m. in the fellowship hall. There is no charge for the meal.

Sandy Hook United Methodist Church — The church gathers weekly for in-person and online worship. This Sunday, Aug. 11, service starts at 11 a.m. Pastor Paul Dazet will bring a message about “Prodigal Church” as part of the worship series “Prodigal”.

Today is the Back to School Bash from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., featuring bounce houses, sno-cones, food, games and prizes, and school supplies while they last!

Restore Columbus Healing Service will be Thursday, Aug. 22 at 7 p.m. This is not just a service but a sanctuary where we embrace everyone seeking peace, healing and spiritual growth. Combined with Petersville UMC and the Hispanic Galilean church, let’s sow the seeds of healing and hope in our community. Everyone is welcome!

The Tim Tuell annual fundraiser cookout will be Saturday, Aug. 24, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Come by for lunch specials which include hamburger, hot dog, chips and a drink for $5. We will also have a lot of baked goods to sweeten your stop! This raises money for what were Tim’s favorite charities.

An outdoor movie night will be on Saturday, Sept. 14, at 7:30 p.m. Bring your lawn chair or blanket and enjoy free popcorn and lemonade while watching “The Croods: A New Age”.

St. Paul Episcopal Church — St. Paul’s is an inclusive faith community of the Episcopal Diocese of Indianapolis. The church meets in person or by livestream at the church’s website, stpaulscolumbus.org.

St. Paul Lutheran Church — Pastor Doug Bauman will deliver the message “Walking in Love” based on Ephesians 4:17-5:2 Sunday at the 8 and 10:45 a.m. services.

Christian fellowship begins at 9:15 a.m. with Christian education classes for all ages beginning at 9:30 a.m. The adult class will be led by Pastor Bauman in the fellowship room exploring biblical teachings related to receiving and responding to Christ’s love and sharing it with others. Pastor Dan Fickenscher will lead the Spanish worship service in the fellowship room at 10:45 a.m. followed by Spanish Bible study at 12:15 p.m.

Matins prayer service is offered each Wednesday in the church at 10:15 a.m.

Radio worship service is every Sunday at 9:30 a.m., and “The Lutheran Hour” is every Sunday at 7 p.m., both on WYGS 91.1 FM.

Wednesday adult Bible classes meet in the fellowship room at 9 a.m. studying the Book of Acts and at 6 p.m. studying First, Second and Third John, followed by Hebrews. Childcare will be provided for the evening class.

A Bible class for women led by Deaconess Taylor Fickenscher will meet Thursday, Aug. 15, in the conference room at 6 p.m.

Three-year-old, preschool and kindergarten openings remain for the 2024-2025 school year. Pre-K-3 meets Tuesdays and Thursdays, 8:15 to 11:15 a.m., and kindergarten meets weekdays, 8:15 to 11:45 a.m. Programs nurture spiritual growth, love of learning, including Christ-centered and developmentally appropriate curriculum, Minds in Motion, and before/after school care options.

Calvary Community Church — The women’s ministry will be presenting “Journey to Restoration” from 1 to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 17 at The Forge on Fourth, 418 Fourth St. in downtown Columbus. The event cost is $20 per person. Licensed behavioral therapist Brenda Harris will present a program focusing on personal restoration from a biblical perspective stressing the need for self-care.
