Brian’s picks

A simple overview: You could say that Columbus is filled with jazz-matazz this week.

* Jazz fans in Columbus have been familiar with keyboardist Steve Allee’s varied stylings for decades now. And the piano man will further nurture his following here with his performance with his Magic Hour band from 5:30 to 7 p.m. today on the east end of Fourth Street in the Ovation Technology Group parking lot. The concert is part of the new JazzIN Columbus series sponsored by the Indianapolis Jazz Foundation and the Columbus Museum of Art and Design, with added support from the Office of Downtown Development. The band will be performing a lot of tunes from Allee’s 1990s disc “The Magic Hour,” only recently released on streaming platforms.

* Indianapolis pianist Kelleen Strutz has been featured soloist with numerous orchestras throughout the United States and has had the honor of sharing the stage with renowned artists such as Metropolitan Opera soprano Angela Brown and internationally acclaimed flutists William Bennett and Jasmine Choi. Giving her more of a warm, human touch here when she performs at 7:30 p.m. Friday with her quartet at the Columbus Indiana Philharmonic’s Jazz at Helen’s series is the fact that she already loves Columbus’ architecture and charm. And now she can can add her own flair to the local arts scene. Information and tickets: thecip.org.
