Olympians edge Warriors, give new coach first win

Columbus East gave Sam LaVelle a victory in his debut as a head boys soccer coach with a 2-1 win against Whiteland on Saturday.

“It means a lot, but I’m just happy for the boys, and I hope we can continue to build on this and get a few more wins,” LaVelle said.

The Warriors took the lead midway through the first half, but the Olympians answered a few minutes later on a free kick by Emilio Quintero Aguirre. Quintero Aguirre added the winning goal early in the second half off an assist from David Sylva.

“It’s a great way to open up,” LaVelle said. “It’s a young team, inexperienced team, so to get a win builds confidence. We’re hoping we can build on this.”
