Poetry performance set at learning center

Joaquín Zihuatanejo, author, poet, spoken word artist, and award-winning teacher, will give a free spoken-word poetry performance, “Joaquin Speaks!” from 2 to 3 p.m. Aug. 28 in the Columbus Learning Center lecture hall.

Born and raised in the barrio of East Dallas, Zihuatanejo captures the duality of the Chicano culture and has captivated thousands with his honest depiction of barrio life. He’s authored several books, including the critically acclaimed “Arsonist.”

In addition to his spoken-word performance for the community, Zihuatanejo will conduct a poetry workshop earlier in the day for AirPark Campus students. “We breathe inspiration, like living poems, into our students,” he said.

Shelley Arroyo, IU Columbus Associate Director of Student Affairs, spearheaded the effort to bring Zihuatanejo to campus after hearing him speak at a conference. “It was such a moving, awe-inspiring experience, I really wanted to share that with our students and the Columbus community. I urge everyone to attend, you won’t regret it!”

This event is co-hosted by IU Columbus and Ivy Tech.

Association surprises teachers, staff

The Bull Dog Alumni Association, with the support of numerous personal donors and corporate sponsors, surprised Columbus North teachers and key support staff with a Welcome-Back-To-School gift on their second day back from summer vacation. Teachers, teaching assistants, counselors, and other key staff found a coupon for Bull Dog apparel and merchandise in their school mailbox on Aug. 6th. Teachers who are new to CNHS this school year also received an additional goody bag to make them feel welcome.

The gifts are part of the Alumni Association’s Teacher Appreciation Program. “We view excellent teachers as the most important factor in a superior high school education,” said Hedy George, Executive Director of the Bull Dog Alumni Association. The Alumni began awarding an Outstanding Teacher of the Year honorarium in 2016 – and has expanded the recognition and appreciation program ever since.

Funding for the program comes from Bull Dog alumni or supporters plus community corporate sponsors. Corporate sponsorships for 2024 came from Elwood Staffing, Centra, The Tony London Company, Russell Development Company, Columbus Wealth, Southern IN Orthopedics, Cummins, Bailey & Wood Mortgage, Farm Bureau Insurance Robert Hendershot Agency, and Becky & Brett Merritt.

Franklin College to host seminar

Franklin College has announced it will host the third annual National Trauma Journalism Symposium on its campus in partnership with the National Trust for Trauma (TTJ). Set to take place on Sept. 19-20, the two-day event will feature world-class speakers and equip journalists to better cover and recover from reporting traumatic stories.

The symposium is a collaboration between the Trust for Trauma Journalism and the Franklin College Pulliam School of Journalism. TTJ is dedicated to supporting journalists who cover violence, conflict, combat and catastrophe by providing crucial services and support before, during and after their assignments in challenging environments. The effects on journalists have long been overlooked and often mask themselves in high incidences of alcoholism, disintegration of personal relations and abandonment of the profession.

The symposium will be filled with opportunities to network and learn from nationally respected journalists and mental health professionals through workshops and panel discussions.

The symposium is designed not only for practicing journalists and journalism students but also for educators teaching these critical subjects in high schools and universities. Students studying psychology, social work, law enforcement and healthcare professions are encouraged to attend.

Scholarships for students are available by contacting Dana Cummings at [email protected]. For more information regarding participants, programming, registration and overnight accommodations, visit traumajournalism.org. Virtual attendance options are also available.
