North runners open with wins

NASHVILLE — Columbus North opened its cross-country season Wednesday by sweeping the boys and girls titles at the Brown County Challenge.

The meet featured each runner on two-person teams running 2.5K (1.55 miles). The place-finishes of the each school’s top three two-person teams were added, with low score winning.

The Bull Dog girls finished with a perfect six points. Silver Creek took second with 24, while Columbus East was third with 31 and Brown County fourth with 37. Martinsville and Waldron did not score as a team.

The North boys scored eight points. Silver Creek finished second with 18, and Waldron edged Martinsville 37-39 for third. The Columbus East boys did not compete.

The Bull Dogs actually claimed the top six places in the girls meet. Carys Glyn-Jones and Kyleigh Wolf won in 18 minutes, 14 seconds. Macy Eaton and Emma Lowther took second in 18:43, followed by Tristan Works and Ainsley Sherlock (19:01), Adira Sluder and Wendy Zhohg (19:25), Reece Peeples and Kodi Smith (19:42) and Rendy Zhong and Maggie Russell (20:05).

Amelia Fay and Madison Swartzentruber finished 11th in 21:58 to lead East. Delaney Rogers and Ainslee Shaw took 16th in 23:25, and Daphne May and Abby Collins were 22nd in 24:58.

Brown County’s Sadie Hiatt and Izzy Miller finished 13th in 22:17. Nora Mofield and Della Hitchcock took 18th in 23:52, and Megan Cumberledge and Michaela Smith were 26th in 26:49.

North’s Neal White and Jace Works won the boys race in 15:03. Graham Pumphrey and Jonny Klaus took third in 15:37, followed by Logan Vanzant and Draven Martinez (15:41), Cole Stevens and Justin Reckers (15:49) and Liam Glyn-Jones and Evan Bense (16:02).

Brown County had two two-man teams. Kia Koester and Nathan Cumberledge finished 17th in 18:20, and Aden Skaggs and Alex Schwenk were 19th in 18:31.
