Columbus firefighters called to train fire near Spear Street and Jonesville Road

Columbus firefighters report the roadway is now open with access to County Road 200S from Jonesville Road. The train is now on the move again with a new engine.

COLUMBUS, Ind. — Columbus firefighters were sent to the scene of a reported fire involving a train near Spear Street and Jonesville Road thursday afternoon.

When firefighters arrived, they reported no evidence of an active fire, said Capt. Mike Wilson, Columbus Fire Department spokesman.

Louisville and Indiana Railroad officials told firefighters that smoke and flames were visible at one point while the train was traveling. Firefighters did find a small fire within an engine car which was put out with a fire extinguisher, Wilson said.

Louisville and Indiana Railroad officials said the train was about 7,000 feet in length and was not transporting materials.

Traffic is current blocked to access County Road 200S from Jonesville Road, although Spear Street is open to access County Road 200S.

Columbus firefighters have letft the scene as of 3:45 p.m., but train officials are working to move the train with an engine car not involved in the fire.
