Looking Back – Aug. 22

Fireman James Miller holds out a painted boot, one of several to be used to collect loose change for motorists at eight city locations for the muscular dystrophy fund drive on Aug. 22, 1974. The local drive was part of a national effort sponsored by firemen to collect money in connection with a Sept. 1 and 2 telethon for muscular dystrophy by entertainer Jerry Lewis.

Professional singer Sylvia McNair was the keynote speaker at the Columbus Indiana Philharmonic’s annual meeting, which highlighted how music helps children learn and develop character and responsibility. McNair also sang a few songs at the event, which took place at YES Cinema.

1999

Shannon Grimes of Columbus was named champion in public speaking at the Indiana State Fair. Beth Rosswurm, also of Columbus, won first alternate in the formal wear category of the State Fair Fashion Revue.

1974

An award ceremony was held for the Columbus Parks and Recreation Department Summer League baseball championships, where the oldest player and first girl to participate were honored. Robin Lasek was presented the second annual Bob Wissman award for being the first girl to play in the junior baseball program, and Eldo Hendricks, 83, was presented a jacket with “Little League Oldest Player” on the back.
