Services and studies

Alongsider Church — Alongsider is a community of house churches coming together to worship as one church at YES Cinema on the first and third Sundays of the month. It’s a place of belonging where members learn, grow, experience community and pray together.

House churches meet in neighborhoods on the second and fourth Sundays for worship through conversational study and community building. The congregation focuses on care and connection, prayer, and sending one another out.

Asbury United Methodist Church — Asbury offers a traditional service at 8:45 a.m. and a contemporary service at 11 a.m. Nursery is available for both services. Kids’ church is offered only at the 11 a.m. service. Sunday school classes meet at 10 a.m. Asbury offers a variety of classes and group studies at various times during the week. Central Heights Church of God — The church offers 9:30 a.m. Sunday school for all ages and worship services at 10:30 a.m. The message will be led by Pastor Jason Johnson. Children’s church takes place during service and a nursery is available.

East Columbus United Methodist Church — Sunday worship service begins at 9 a.m. Pastor Jongmin Lee will deliver the message. The morning blended worship service includes praise music and traditional hymns. Children receive a special message during children’s moment and are dismissed for children’s church during the service. Sunday school begins at 10:10 a.m. with classes for all age groups. Grace’s Table Free Hot Meal is served the second Sunday of each month at 5 p.m. in the Youth Center Building.

In September, the church will commemorate 70 years of worship at the current location on Indiana Ave. On Sunday, Sept. 1 the service will be begin at 9 a.m. Special guest singer Mark Vice will perform during the morning service, Pastor Lee will deliver a meditation, and no children’s church will be held.

On Sunday, Sept. 8, a special anniversary old-fashioned traditional service will be held. The service will begin at 8:30 a.m. to commemorate the original service time along with no modern technologies. Vintage hymn books will be used, pew Bibles will be available for all gospel and worship readings and the chancel choir will perform traditional hymns. Sunday School will follow the morning service. Holy Communion will be served on Sunday, Sept. 15 during the morning service.

Fairlawn Presbyterian Church — The church has in-person and Zoom services at 9:30 a.m. To join on Zoom, email the church office at [email protected] to request a Zoom link.

Fellowship and coffee hour is every Wednesday at 7 p.m. Contact the church for the Zoom link.

Women’s Bible study is the third Tuesday of each month at 1 p.m.

Faith Lutheran Church — Worship each Sunday begins at 9 a.m. in person and livestreamed on the church’s Facebook page. Most Sundays, Sunday school and an adult Bible study are offered following the worship service.

Preschool classes continue throughout the year and the congregation offers an afterschool program each school day from 3 to 5:30 p.m. with busing from Southside Elementary.

First Baptist Church — Worship begins at 9:30 a.m. Sundays, with a nursery and children’s programming available. Pastor Evan Guse is preaching a sermon series through November titled “Faithful.” The church also has several Sunday school offerings and different Bible study groups that meet throughout the week. The current Bible Study series for both the men and women is “Profiles of Courage: Five Women in The HERitage of Jesus.” The Women’s Bible Study is on Thursdays at 9 a.m. in the church’s Chapel and the Men’s Bible Study is on Fridays at 7 a.m. in the church’s Fellowship Hall.

First Lutheran Church — First Lutheran Church offers in-person worship on Sundays at 8:45 a.m. for the traditional service and 11:15 a.m. for the contemporary service. For those who are not able to attend in-person worship, the church also offers livestreaming of both services that can be accessed at youtube.com/user/FLCColumbus. All are welcome.

First Presbyterian Church —The church closes out the month with a look at how Jesus challenged people to live together. The gospel passage will be Matthew 5:43-48 and Pastor Felipe Martinez’s sermon title will be “Redefining Community.”

People in the community in need of a meal are invited to hot meals offered at 5 p.m. Friday (enter through the glass doors on Franklin Street). The church is an LGBTQ-friendly church, open and affirming to all.

First United Methodist Church — On Sunday, Aug. 25, at 10 a.m., Rev. Mackenzie Phillips will deliver the message, “The Journey Begins”. The Scripture will be Isaiah 41:8-14 and John 6:48-50. The church encourages those attending in person to arrive 10 minutes before the service. Child care will be available from 9:45 a.m. until the end of the 10 a.m. service. Sunday school for children ages 4-12 will start at 9 a.m.

For those unable to attend the in-person service or not yet comfortable meeting in person, service livestreams will be available on the church Facebook page and the church YouTube channel (FUMC Columbus). Videos will be available on the church website for later viewing as well.

The Rev. Howard Boles is leading a class on the book of Genesis on Sunday mornings at 9 a.m. in the multi-purpose room. Jeri Ahlbrand is leading a study entitled, “The Way” written by Adam Hamilton, which will meet in Room 116 after worship at 11 a.m. We invite you to attend the class that works best for you!

Destination Unknown! On September 2, meet at the church at 4 p.m. and bring $20, wear a good pair of walking shoes and your thinking cap! The night will be filled with adventure and mystery. Pickup will be at 5:45 p.m., location given when you RSVP.

The church is pleased to be a participant in the 2024 Pride Festival on Sept. 7 at Mill Race Park. Again this year, our church will have a booth for this event to show our love and support for the LGBTQ community. Garden City Christian Church — Sunday school classes are available for infants through adults at 9 a.m. At 10 a.m. on Sundays, the church offers a blended worship service as well as classes for kids through fifth grade.

Wednesday evening Bible study, “The Life of Moses,” is at 6:30 p.m. weekly.

Troop IN-0110 meets twice monthly on Thursdays from 5:30 to 7 p.m. during the school year.

Mount Pleasant Christian Church — The church invites the community to visit the little 150-year-old country church for a 10:30 a.m. service every Sunday. The church preaches out of the King James Bible and sings out of hymn books. The church is Bible-based, Christ-centered, and spirit-led.

Petersville United Methodist Church — On Sunday, Aug. 25, at 9 a.m., guest speaker, Martha Harden, will bring the morning message.

Kathy Bush will serve as song and worship leader. Teresa Covert will share the children’s sermon. The service will be available to view on Facebook throughout the week.

Anyone in the community is invited to enjoy a meal and a time of sharing at “The Table” at the church every second Thursday at 6 p.m. in the fellowship hall. There is no charge for the meal.

Sandy Hook United Methodist Church — The church gathers weekly for in-person and online worship. This Sunday, Aug. 25, service starts at 11 a.m. Pastor Paul Dazet will bring a message about “Blue and Red Make Purple: Kindness” as part of the worship series “Do Unto Others”.

Sunday school is offered for all ages from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. The nursery is available from 9:30 a.m. until after service. Online services can be found on the church Facebook page or YouTube channel.

The Tim Tuell annual fundraiser cookout will be today from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Come by for lunch specials that include hamburger, hot dog, chips and a drink for $5. We will also have a lot of baked goods to sweeten your stop! This raises money for what were Tim’s favorite charities.

An outdoor movie night will be on Saturday, Sept. 14, at 7:30 p.m. Bring your lawn chair or blanket and enjoy free popcorn and lemonade while watching “The Croods: A New Age”.

St. Paul Episcopal Church — St. Paul’s is an inclusive faith community of the Episcopal Diocese of Indianapolis. The church meets in person or by livestream at the church’s website, stpaulscolumbus.org.

St. Paul Lutheran Church — Pastor Doug Bauman will deliver the message “Christ’s Love for His Bride” based on Ephesians 5:22-33 Sunday at the 8 and 10:45 a.m. services.

Christian fellowship begins at 9:10 a.m. followed by Christian education classes for all ages at 9:30 a.m. Pastor Daniel Fickenscher will lead the Spanish worship service in the fellowship room at 10:45 a.m., followed by Spanish Bible study at 12:15 p.m.

Matins prayer service led by Pastor Fickenscher is offered each Wednesday in the church at 10:15 a.m.

Radio worship service is every Sunday at 9:30 a.m., and “The Lutheran Hour” is every Sunday at 7 p.m., both on WYGS 91.1 FM.

Wednesday adult Bible classes meet in the fellowship room at 9 a.m. studying the Book of Acts and at 6 p.m. studying First, Second and Third John, followed by Hebrews. Childcare will be provided for the evening class.

Kindergarten openings remain for the 2024-2025 school year with classes meeting weekdays, 8:15 to 11:45 a.m. Programs nurture spiritual growth, love of learning, including Christ-centered and developmentally appropriate curriculum, Minds in Motion, and before/after school care options.

Abundant Harvest Ministries — Do you or someone you love need prayer? Stop by for healing and support. On Aug. 31, from noon to 2 p.m., the church will be having a drive-thru prayer located in the parking lot by Donut Central. We will be giving a free meal to those who would like one as well. Everyone is invited!
